Assam Shops and Establishments (Amendment) Act, 2026 – Key Labour Law Changes
The Government of Assam has published the Assam Act No. XVII of 2026 – The Assam Shops and Establishment (Amendment) Act, 2026 in the Assam Gazette Extraordinary dated 2 September 2026. The Act received the Governor’s assent on 31 August 2026.
The Amendment Act introduces changes to the existing Assam Shops and Establishments law, with implications for establishments covered under the Act.

EPFO Wage Ceiling Increased to ₹25,000/Month
The Ministry of Labour & Employment, Government of India has issued a notification dated 17 September 2026 revising the wage ceiling for the purposes of Chapter III of the Code on Social Security, 2020.
- New Wage Ceiling: ₹25,000 per month
- Effective From: 17 September 2026
- Notification No.: S.O. 5109(E)
- Previous Notification: S.O. 2702(E) dated 29 May 2026 has been superseded

West Bengal Professional Tax Update – 2026
The Government of West Bengal has proposed amendments to the Professional Tax Schedule under the West Bengal State Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Act, 1979.
- Employee PT: Nil up to ₹20,000/month
- Maximum employee PT: ₹208/month for salary above ₹1 lakh
- Specified professions/businesses: ₹2,500 per annum
- Part A (Sl. No. 1), Part B & Part C: Effective from 1 Oct 2026
- Part A (Sl. No. 2 & 3): Effective from 1 Apr 2027
